The case presented in this report refers to a woman found to have a large solitary Peutz-Jeghers type polyp of the stomach, with a maximal diameter of 7cm. Extended investigation did not reveal intestinal polyposis or any other sign of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. Because of the size of the polyp, a partial gastrectomy was performed. To the best of our knowledge, there are only three other reports in the literature of a solitary Peutz-Jeghers type gastric polyp occurring in the absence of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome. This patient is scheduled to undergo a follow-up examination every 2 years to detect any sign of the development of Peutz-Jeghers syndrome or malignancies commonly associated with it Link: Click to see Pubmed record Title: Long-term effects of dietary calcium on risk markers for colon cancer in patients with familial polyposis Authors: Stern HS;Gregoire RC;Kashtan H;Stadler J;Bruce RW; Journal: Surgery Date: 1990 Sep Abstract: There is conflicting evidence regarding the benefit of calcium in prevention of colon cancer. Patients who have undergone ileorectal operations for familial polyposis can be useful to study hypotheses on prevention of colon cancer. In this study we evaluated the effect of long-term calcium supplementation on risk markers of colon cancer. Thirty-one patients with familial polyposis, after subtotal colectomy, were randomized to group A, which received placebo, and group B, which received 1200 mg of calcium daily. Intervention lasted 9 months, in which they underwent four 3-monthly evaluations that included food records, fecal pH, calcium and bile acids, and rectal biopsy for thymidine labeling. Age, height, weight, macronutrients, and dietary fiber were comparable in both groups. More women were in the group that received placebo. Fecal pH, weight, and bile acid levels were similar before intervention and remained unchanged. Fecal calcium levels were similar before intervention and increased in the calcium group throughout the study (p less than 0.05). Labeling index of placebo and calcium groups was similar before intervention (4.8 and 6.1, respectively). After 3 months it was reduced in both groups (3.1 and 4.4, respectively; p less than 0.05). After 6 months it was reduced only in the calcium group (3.4; p less than 0.05). After 9 months it did not differ from the starting point (3.4 and 4.0, respectively). In a long-term intervention study with a homogenous group of patients with familial polyposis, supplemental dietary calcium did not affect mucosal risk factors for colon cancer Link: Click to see Pubmed record Title: Unusual manifestations of the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome Authors: Brigg JK;Taylor TV;Torrance HB; Journal: Br Med J Date: 1976 Oct 9 Abstract: Link: Click for Pubmed record Title: Sex cord tumor with annular tubules a distinctive ovarian tumor of the Peutz-Jeghers syndrome Authors: Scully RE; Journal: Cancer Date: 1970 May Abstract: Link: Click for Pubmed record Title: A CASE OF PEUTZ-JEGHERS SYNDROME PRESENTING WITH RECURRENT INTUSSUSCEPTION Authors: GRAHAM L. NEWSTEAD Journal: MEDICAL JOURNAL OF AUSTRALIA Date: 1965 Abstract: A CASE OF THE PEUTZ-JEGHERS SYNDROME IS PRESENTED AND DISCUSSED, BEING OF INTEREST AS AN UNCOMMON CONDITION. PEUTZ, IN 1921, FIRST DESCRIBED FAMILIAL MULTIPLE POLYPOSIS OF THE SMALL INTESTINE ASSOCIATED WITH PIGMENTATION, AND IN 1949 HAROLD JEGHERS REPORTED ON 23 CASES HE FOUND IN THE LITERATURE, ADDING A FULL CLINICAL DISCUSSION OF THE CONDITION. SMITH Journal: REPRINTED FROM DISEASES OF THE COLON & RECTUM Date: 1958 Abstract: THE PEUTZ-JEGHERS SYNDROME HAS RECEIVED MUCH ATTENTION RECENTLY IN THE MEDICAL PRESS. ALTHOUGH IT REMAINS A VERY RARE ENTITY, A SURPRISINGLY LARGE NUMBER OF CASES HAS BEEN REPORTED SINCE GENERAL INTEREST WAS AROUSED, PROBABLY THE MOST SIGNIFICANT FACET OF THE SYNDROME IS THE FACT THAT A READILY DETECTABLE AND FREQUENTLY STRIKING EXTERNAL SIGN (PIGMENTATION) MAY LEAD THE PHYSICIAN TO SUSPECT POLYPOSIS OF THE SMALL BOWEL, A CONDITION WHICH MIGHT OTHERWISE NOT BE DIAGNOSED. GERRISH Journal: ANNALS OF SURGERY Date: 1957 Abstract: THE SURGEON'S INCREASING AWARENESS OF INTESTINAL POLYPOSIS ASSOCIATED WITH PIGMENTATION OF THE LIPS AND ORAL MUCOSA IS EVIDENCED BY THE ROWING NUMBER OF REPORTS IN THE LITERATURE DURING THE PAST FEW YEARS. THE PURPOSE OF THIS COMMUNICATION IS TO PRESENT A AN ADDITIONAL CASE OF THIS SYNDROME WHICH IS INSTRUCTIVE FOR TWO REASONS. GOODALL. BRIT. J. SURG. 41: 278-286 (NOV.) 1954. WHEN A BARBER CAME TO THE SURGICAL OUTPATIENT DEPARTMENT OF THEIR HOSPITAL WITH AN INTERDIGITAL SINUS OF THE HAND, CURRIE AND ASSOCIATES WERE UNABLE TO FIND 3 SIMILAR CASE IN THEIR RECORDS, BUT WERE SURPRISED TO FIND, FOUR OTHERS AS A RESULT OF CASUAL INQUIRY AT THEIR BARBER SHOP.
